F for Faery Witch

Faery (Fairy) Witch: An eclectic witch who seeks to commune with faery folk and nature spirits in their magick workings, spells and rituals. They have no organization or tradition and it has developed of its own accord through common practice. (Not to be confused with the 'Feri Movement'.) Usually, those who work with the fey may also leave offerings regularly, as thanks for the assistance of a faery in their spellwork. They tend to be lone practitioners unless they can find like-minded witches to practice with.

Faery witchcraft is a beloved relationship with one’s human community, but even more importantly, it includes the local plants, animals, streams, and hills in all their aspects (physical and spiritual), as well as the Gods who manifest through the land and through our flesh. Faery witches seek harmonious relationship with the land and people where they live.

At times, of course, seeking harmony may require conflict, as they are called to defend human or other-than-human beings in our community who are in danger. Faery Craft is a practical approach of work and collaboration with the Faery realm.

How to live like a fairy:

- Grow flowers, walk and dig in the soil
- Eat wild strawberries and blueberries, have fruit picnics
- Dance your heart away while the moon is shining upon you
- Drink water infused with lavender and honey
- Collect things that call to you, let them whisper their secrets and long history to you

This is a guide on which fae work best with certain types of witches.

Fairy Folk And Their Kin

There are many types of fairy folk that are commonly experienced and fun to learn about. Here are few of my favorites I have tried to find for years.

Dryads are the indwelling spirits of trees and are able to slip out of their  at trunks and limbs at night, appearing as tall, tree-like white or gray shadows in the moonlight. They silently roam through homes, specially ones made of wood or old ones where rough wood was hewn for posts and beams. While inside a home, they may stand at the window peering out at the moon lit night, humming softly, getting a new perspective of their own wooded habitat from interior spaces. They are kind, gentle, and grandfatherly.

How Dryads Help Us
Dryads want to keep the trees they inhabit healthy and looking good and are sensitive to all the creatures that depend upon them remaining well-rooted and stable, so they need our conscientious care and appreciation of trees. They do not like when limbs fall from the trees they inhabit and prefer that their human counterparts collect and branches and twigs that may fall (it actually embarrasses them or makes them sad to have their own dead branches beneath their canopy). Dryads appeal to us to help them maintain the base of their trunks keeping it all tidy and delightful, and will acknowledge our care for them in return by keeping us safe as best they can. Dryads will not allow the tree they lodge in, or its heavy branches, to fall upon homes or people if they can help it. And they often convey mystical messages to anyone looking up at them or caring for them in appreciation. Messages such as “It is time for you to move on in life,” or “Great change is coming.” Conversely, they will deliver messages you may ask them to send out, to change the weather or to send thoughts or warnings to loved ones.

How To Attract Dryads
Clear any underbrush and broken twigs or limbs from any trees nearby. Inspect the tree for damage, look closely at the bark and even place a rock circle at the base surrounding the tree to let your residential Dryads know that you are focusing on them and wish them well. Be kind to animals that live in their branches and don’t be too shy to talk, sit with, hug, or sing to trees that live among you. Try it and see what happens. These deeply compassionate, aged spirits are there to help us.

Elemental Fairies

The four elements are Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire, and they each have different attributes and personalities. So,too, do the fairies associated with each element differ in vast and small ways.

Earth Fairies

Remember playing in the mud as kids, maybe making mud pies or getting covered in it, and feeling happy to squish it between your fingers and toes? Fairies of the Earth are at work underfoot; they’re the entities that govern the turn of soil, helping the insects and worms that keep soil aerated and healthy. They encourage seeds, helping them germinate, and then coax the roots, urging them to have bold confidence to claim the soil for themselves. Earth fairies are stocky with dark green, clay red, or brown hues. They have wings that resemble beetles, shiny wings. They’re dense in appearance rather than holographic. They’ll brush against your ankles as you walk, playfully tugging at you through the mud or pricking your bare feet with tiny sticks or thorns, just out of rambunctiousness. They are seen best in the gloaming light at end of day, as  they like to catch a glimpse of the residential Fairy Queen who passes by in twilight.

How Earth Fairies Help Us
Earth Fairies know that we come from dust and shall return to it, and that all living things on Earth eventually break down into the soil, in one form or another. While we are alive, the Fairies of the Earth long to claim us as the Earth’s gravity and magnetic pull show us that our place is naturally the ground we walk on. They help us understand intrinsically that we thrive from the root  up, and need a foundational base in which to grow truly strong. The electrons and healthy bacteria emitted through the earth have great health benefits to us, shifting our moods and regulating bodily organs. Children instinctively run outside barefoot, and adults should, too! Earth fairies want us to be and feel grounded, to receive the gifts from the core of the Earth into our own core, and their mission is to give us reason to stabilize our lives through real depth; they want us to take root and know we belong.

How To Connect With Earth Fairies
Go outside as often as you can and walk barefoot. Try to get your feet against the actual ground, and simply feel yourself there, your weight sinking in or being fully supported by it. Earth Fairies will be present as you are infused with pure energy in the form of electrons, receiving and connecting with the biological rhythms of your planet. And don’t be shy about digging, tending to gardens, and reaching with bare hands into the earth. You may not be making mud pies or sand castles anymore, but there are great benefits of getting dirty and standing upon or getting into the rich soil.

If you want to be at your utmost desirable, Nymph vibes are there for you. Sultry, sensual, sexy, and most alluring are creatures known as Nymphs. They get our hearts quivering as they tease us with their mysterious charisma. Enchantment and starlight appeal is their essence. They’re seen in quick flashes of light upon water, or heard at times as whispering or gentle rustling in the night, like pillow talk whispers. They’re shimmery apparitions of lust and their giggles sound like one who has known desires fulfilled. They may inhabit land, forested areas, rivers, trees, and even more cultivated areas of orchards, loving to roam on high in the groves of fruit or nut trees. Their loveliness gives wisteria and lilac their beguiling aroma.

How Nymphs Help Us
Similar to Mermaids, Sirens, and Selkies, these nature spirits express a sexual fecundity that permeates matter. They are shy but curious, playful and uninhibited in their seductive temptation and will charm you into your best, most captivating self. Fruitful, young, budding, and irresistible, they appeal to the passion within those they encounter. Humans may find themselves as if in a dream or with ravenous appetite for pleasure when Nymphs are near. Sitting quietly in the shade of a tree near a gentle spring, that sense of yearning and longing for love and fervor for life may peak within when a Nymph sets her gaze upon you. Nymphs want you to fall in love and have love.

How To Attract Nymphs
When you have a keen desire to be loved and to love another, Nymphs will draw near. If you wander through a wood or nearby a spring or brook, singing softly about love, Nymphs will hear you and follow. Where there is a desire for love and ample sexual tension, a Nymph is not far off. See and especially touch everything outside, the leaves (are they glossy or velvety?), the flowers (are they satiny or plush?), and close your eyes as you feel the contour of rocks and the limbs of trees. Everything is sexually charged in a Nymph’s world, and reacquainting yourself with textures is primary to stimulate your carnal nature. Nymphs wake you up to love making, and generously tantalize your basic sense of pleasure.

These fairies look like old women, and the term is often used interchangeably for spirits as well as for human crones with magical powers. Folklore often holds them responsible for nightmares, and some stories say they sit on sleeping men’s chests, causing a feeling of immobility known as sleep paralysis. In other tales, hags transform themselves into beautiful young women and sneak into men’s bedrooms at night as succubi to have sex with sleeping mortals.

Hags turn up  in the myths of many cultures, as the Irish banshee, Eastern Europe’s Baba Yaga, and Japan’s Onibaba. Perhaps the most familiar hags in the English-speaking world are three witches in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, who chant “toil and trouble”. while stirring their strange brew. Although folklore acknowledge their powers as healers, sometimes linking hags with Hecate and the nature goddesses of winter, neither mythology nor modern literature has much good to say about these beings. Like witches, hags for centuries have been portrayed almost universally as ugly, evil creatures who consort with the devil and other demonic forces. This misconception may have contributed to the murders of countless human women and children in Europe and the American colonies from the fifteenth through the eighteenth centuries.

Meditation: Get Into A Fairy Reverie

We want to have knowledge of our natural world, of the land, the stars, and the tides, but even more so, to revel in how it makes us feel as it powerfully draws us forth, to swim, to play, to immerse ourselves as we once did as children. We climb summits to feel a stronger, triumphant sense of self, and we explore caves to go deeper into what is not commonly known or experienced, Nature becomes symbolic of and entwined with our inner knowing and concept of who we are, and that inner knowing tells us the spirit of life is inherently one and the same as fairy life. It is mysterious and ethereal, likes us, even more than we are physical.

The realm of fairies is open when we allow ourselves a more fluid sensibility and acceptance of it, simply being in and with nature, to allow love to freely flow to and from our hearts, overriding our impulse to mentally control, characterize, and classify everything. Inhabitants of our environment beyond our textbook labels will tell us who they are if we listen and watch with a hint of expectation. This is not a mental process so much as an intuitive opening through creative, imaginative interplay with nature. However, this is not to say that fairy ways are only whimsical or trifling.

Fairies are fun, yes, and jocular and frolicsome, yet in their way they are very serious, somber, and tempestuous. They’re as changeable as the weather. Inwardly, we know we must respect nature and the power within it to aid us or destroy us. Fairies are one with this natural momentum of the elements as we watch it do what it does. Fairies are playful and high-spirited, but not to be disregarded. As has been passed down to us through time, we know not to tick them off, these fairy folk- there is mischief in them when we do. They are not just passive presences, they are a prevailing life-force energy that we cannot deny, and yet they’re elusive. Being engendered into fairy wisdom takes a willingness to open and develop the inspired, visionary, artistic, and mystical mien of our human essence.

We need a little bit of daring and a lot of friskiness mixed with quiet awe to engage properly with fairies. Fairies are entities that baffle, confuse, delight, and even aggravate, agitate, and throw tantrums until they get their way. They are the energy of “the will to thrive,” and that’s spunky. Fairies are helping life prosper, by aligning with it to funnel beauty and longing and love into each living particle. Watch anything grow and you will recognize it; you’ll see tenderness, innocence, and also a dauntless presence of flourishing zeal. All growing life knows no other than to strive to prosper. Fairies are made of this abundant spirit of life. Look at a leaf as the sun bathes it. The leaf is more than willing to receive all it needs and ask for nothing less. The sun gives all it has to boldly give. This same simple determination to blossom, bloom, and triumph is fairy essence.

For this boldness, fairies are often seen as demanding and spoiled, full of spite if less than desired is given. Fairies , in their machinations, want what they want. A fairy will demand whatever it may need to survive and anything else it wants is expected to be given (for optimal blossoming, and more)- or else!

-If they’re young at heart or just artistic, get them a fairy coloring book
-crystals that attract faeries such as: clear quartz, rose quartz, amethyst, moss agate, and goldstone

Faerie guidance oil
Oil is to be used by dabbing a little on the third eye. It will increase your ability to sense the faeries and hear their guidance. You may even see faeries in your minds eye. Good to use before tarot or other divination techniques or before sleep to induce dreams of the faery realms.

Rose petals for attracting faeries and their loving guidance
Dandelion fluff for increased psychic ability
Elderflower to produce dreams of the faerie realms
Lavender to attract faeries
Daisy petals to create psychic awareness of nature spirits
Chamomile for attracting wealth- essentially the spiritual essence of “shiny things” that are known to attract faeries
Wormwood to induce visions and calling up spirits (Please add a very tiny pinch only of this, it is toxic in large amounts)
Rose essential oil for psychic visions
Olive oil carrier
miniature jar or bowl

In your jar or bowl mix your olive oil and rose essential oil. No need to go overboard with the rose oil, just add a few drops until it becomes fragrant. Mix your herbs into the oils and seal your jar. It will be fine to use straight away but it will become stronger over time. Leave out in the moonlight on the next full moon for added strength.  Dab on the third eye when you wish to communicate with the faeries during tarot readings, divination, and meditation.

Faery Witch Tip
Hold a magnifying glass up to your eye to blur your vision to help you to better see faeries. Something about blurring the world around you makes it easier to sense their presence.

Witch tip 2
If you don’t want to attract the fae, don’t buy too much honey at once.

Witch tip 3
Moon is the perfect time to connect with the Fae. The full moon awakens the spirit realm, strengthens intuition and deepens your connection to divine magick.

E for Eclectic Witch

Eclectic Witch
An individual approach that picks and chooses from many different traditions and creates a personalized form of witchcraft that meets their individual needs and abilities. They do not follow a particular religion or tradition, but study and learn from many different systems and use what works best for them. Many Eclectic Witches refer to themselves as Solitary Practioners, Sorcerors, Hedge Witches, Green, White, and Grey Witches. Some consider themselves Wicca, as long as the Rede is adhered to, the Earth and the Universe revered. One main complaint made against the Eclectic Witch is that they are not true Wiccans because they build a taylor-made religion or tradition for themselves from the ground up rather than following an established or correct form of Wicca. Their minds remain open and are receptive to knowledge, ideas, beliefs and methods that others practice. They adapt well to different situations and create their own paths by what they believe to be true and right at that time in their life (simply put – they don’t follow rules). They like to explore and make their own mistakes and take from experiences in turn creating their own rules and traditions. It’s why you can bring 2 Eclectic Witches into a room yet they are totally different in the way they practise, live, and believe as they are all different in some way.

I am an Eclectic Witch. I have always been, it´s clearly my thing. But because I am also Wiccan, I kind of make my own rules. I don´t like people to say what I need to do so I decide it myself. And I am that kind of person who likes little bit this and that so.. this fit me. So maybe I make this post about in general witchy things because being eclectic means you are basically little bit of every witch type.

Side note: I am more of a pagan witch now a days, I believe in Finnish old faith/belief.  I made this post like a year ago, oh how things have changed in that time. I still like a lot of things, but I have been more focused on northern beliefs, specially in Finnish. So.. still kinda eclectic.

  • Are you an Eclectic Witch? You are a little bit of everything. This also means that you have a hard time making up your mind on some matters because you find interest in everything. You tend to fall hard in love. You probably could be/study anything!

Witchery Tips

-A quartz stone near the oven makes your food taste better.

-Get a lunar calendar to stay up-to-date with moon cycles.

-A full moon increases extrasensory perception and so is the perfect time for psychic spells, rituals or potions.

-Aphrodisiacs should always be prepared during the waxing moon.

-Trust your instincts.

-Always make your intent clear during a spell.

-Sage can smell like weed sometimes, be careful of that.

-Peach and avocado pits ward off negativity.

-Place rosehips in your wallet to attract prosperity.

-Use honey to sweeten the outcomes of your spells.

-Self-care is witchcraft. Baths are literal and metaphorical cleansing rituals. Drawing are like complex sigils to clear your mind and calm you down.

For E there were also these 2 types, but I think that they are well explained in these already, but I still wanted to mention them, although I am not going to make different post about them.

Embroidery / Sewing / Knit - One who embues magick into household “stitching” or “string” hobbies such as embroidery, sewing, knitting, stringing, and knotting ~ Basically, one who identifies with using knot or chord magick in many different skills.

Energy - Those who prefer to do magick through energy exercises and manipulation rather than with many physical tools or materials; using the enhanced power of the mind and the body’s natural energies to bring about a magickal result or feeling. (Also may include aura work)

E for Earth Witch

Earth - Specifically centered on the element of Earth; grounding exercises, rock/soil collecting, strong appreciation of the natural world, creating and using symbols associated with earth

Similar to Kitchen and Green Witch.

The Earth element is the one most closely linked with our physical world, and the densest of all the elements. It is the foundation on which the other elements, and is a receptive energy, helping us to accept responsibility and bringing to our attention limitations in our makeup. It is represented in the forms of burying objects in the earth, herbalism, and making images out of wood or stone. Spells that benefit from the element are business-related spells, fertility-related spells, prosperity-related spells, and stability-related spells.

You might be a Earth Witch if you...

-feel deep connection with nature
-have great collection of herbs and essential oils
-you love walks and foraging
-you attract animals and insects
-you work with Earth element
-you live in harmony and rhythm of the nature
-have green and healthy diet
-you have a herbal journal of some kind or any nature related journal
-you are obsessed learning everything about nature

Earth witch gets energy from trees, crystals and animals. Earth witches abilities are protection, strength, healing and wealth. Their strengths are being grounded, logical and hard working. They love dirt in their hands while doing gardening or their feet while walking in nature bare foot. They enjoy everything related to earth and nature. They are good with animals and have obsession with herbs knowledge and essential oils. Earth witches surround them with plants and like to use green as their favorite color.. in basically everything, like in clothing and their decor. They may have a some kind of collection of rocks and crystals.

Even when I was a kid, I was fascinated by nature and everything in it. I walked in forests for hours and could just spend time watching trees and collecting rocks. It was a sad day when my mom threw away my rock collection. I still love rocks, but crystals have become maybe more important in these past few years. I love to do grounding, my head is always in the clouds (read my Air witch post), so it is very important to come down from the clouds and just be grounded. It even makes me think more clearly, helps me make better decisions even. I love everything green, I would loooove to have more plants in my apartment, but sadly it is just too difficult, my cat´s keep eating the plants and only room I can have plants, the sun brights too brightly and the room is very hot. But I try my best to have even something here. What is your favorite thing about nature? What you like to do the most in nature? I am going camping next week, can´t freaking wait, eek!! There is probably coming a post about it, so.. exited about that too!

How to connect with nature

Make contact with the earth. Take a walk in the grass barefoot, hug a tree, plant something with your bare hands, meditate on the dirt.

Have indoor plants. Not only do they freshen the air around you, but each plant brings it own unique benefits as well, such as mood boosters.

Open your window and blinds.  Breathe in the fresh air and take in your outdoor surroundings.

If possible, do what you do indoors, outdoors! Even if you’re just sitting on a patio, you can still enjoy the benefits of the outdoors while doing what you need to do.

Collect outdoor elements. Often I see witches decorate their altar with outdoor elements. This is a simple and effective way to better your connection with nature.

If you can, create a relaxing environment for yourself. Light a candle, shift position, stretch, get in some pajamas, set yourself up to relax.

Feel your energy pool with each exhale. Let it graze the surface of your skin. Let it accumulate.

Feel the ground beneath you. Where are you? Are you sitting with your legs crossed on a grassy hill? Are you stretched out in an armchair? Are you lying in bed? Are you on a train or in a car?

Wherever you are, beneath the floor is soil. There are roots clinging to the earth, there are plants finding peace and solace beneath the ground. Picture a plant you love sprouting in the very place you sit. Is it a flower? An herb? A tree?

Take another deep breath, keep going, feel the air in your lungs.

You are surrounded by the atmosphere. A whole bunch of gases are protecting you from anything spooky that might be out in space. You are safe here. You are safe.

Remember that wherever you are, you are on the Earth. You are a part of the world. Life thrives above, beneath, and all around you. You are alive.

You are here, wherever you are. You are not in any imminent danger. Maybe you’re not okay right now, maybe you don’t feel relaxed and safe, but you are alive. Despite everything, you exist, you are here with everybody else.

Everything will be okay.

Take a few more deep breaths.

Keep going until you feel a bit better. Go get a glass of cold water, if you can. Try to grab a snack if you’re hungry. Take a shower, even. Whatever you need to do to take care of yourself.

Dream - (A possible variation of Hedge) Mindful and internal magickal practice mainly based from interpreting dreams and/or engaging in lucid dreaming. Those who intensify as this may “de-code” symbols and messages in the dream world similar to how one would use a divination technique.

Let´s get real here. I need a lot of sleep. Like a LOT. I also used to keep dream journal when I was a kid and now a days I sometimes write little novels about my dreams. I also could control my dreams, realized when I am dreaming and say "wake up" to myself while having a nightmare. Lucid dreaming can be very exiting experience and you can learn to do it. If you have trouble sleeping, you might try dream meditation tapes. Those whale sounds or rain kind. I have never tried but I could some day, that would be a new thing. I also want to try to put stuff (like crystals that helps you sleep or see certain dreams) under my pillow again and make some dream tea´s.  Dreams  and dreaming can be an empowering and energy giving thing. To me, it definitely is. Let´s meet in a dream.

What kind of dreams do you have?

Putting things under your pillow

Here is a list of few things you can put under there.

-Lapis lazuli  for awareness of your dreams, and vividness of those dreams.
-Clear quartz  to wake up with more energy, after you awake from your sleep.
-Bayleaf  in order to have more prophetic dreams.
-Chamomile  in order to promote relaxation, and good  dreams.
-Rose petals  in order to bring love into your waking life.
-Peppermint  in order to promote relaxation, and vivid dreams.
-Lavender  in order to promote calm, and in order for you to sleep well.
-Anise  in order to prevent nightmares.
-Rosemary  in order to prevent nightmares, and to bring deep sleep.
-Garlic  in order to promote sleep well.
-You can put a blade of grass, or a leaf underneath your pillow to promote growth, and change in your waking life.
-Money for wealth, and prosperity in your waking life.
-You can put a picture of someone underneath your pillow in order to connect with them better.
-You can put the name of someone underneath your pillow in order to connect with them better.
-You can put all manner of sigil underneath your pillow in order to get the effect of that Sigil into your dreams, and waking life.

Sweet Dreams Sachet

You will need

• a small pouch/bag/jar/container
• amethyst
• rose quartz
• sugar (for extra sweetness)
• basil leaves (to banish those bad dreams)

First cleanse the stones of any energy they had attained. Then  place them both in small pouch and sprinkle sugar and basil over them. As you drew the strings on the pouch, say a this spell or make your own.

“ Dreams be sweet,
dreams be kind,
during this rest, give me peace of mind”

Repeat until intent had been made clear, then place it under the pillow inside of the pillow case.

Full Moon Dreams Tea

Signed, sealed, closure, magic, endings, psychic, creativity, manifest dreams.

2 tbsp Chamomile
1 tsp Lavender
1 tsp Spearmint
½ tsp Organic Honey or Licorice Root

Dream witch tips

-Always cleanse yourself after a nightmare. Dreams manifest energy so get rid of those negative energies and use extra self care the next day. Your mind and spirit will thank you 🕉
**For cleansing after a nightmare you may use lemon, thyme, and lavender water infusion, you can drink it or add it to a bath

-Place amethyst and scolecite under your pillow or wear them as an amulet to induce lucid dreaming and peaceful astral projection

-Trouble sleeping lately? Having anxious or unclear dreams?
Open the window closest to your bed, and shake out your covers.
Completely changing your bedding is great, but I know it takes a lot of spoons to do that.
Shake your covers, beat your pillows, beat and brush off crumbs from your sheet.
This should clear up stagnant energy from your sleeping space and clear up your head!

-“Place lavender under your pillow while thinking of your wish. Do this just prior to retiring for the night. In the morning, if you have dreamt of anything relating to your wish, it will come true. However, if you did not have dreams, or if they were unconnected with your wish, it will not manifest”
~ Scott Cunningham’s encyclopedia of magical herbs

-An obsidian and amethyst combo does wonders in warding against nightmares and ensuring peaceful dreams

-Sea sand is amazing for dream work. Keep a jar of sea sand (dream dust) next to your bed to protect against nightmares and help guide your dreams
**add rosemary to help remember your dreams
*** add citrine for an extra anti-nightmare boost

-Herb sachets hung above your bed (request herb sachet recipes from me if you’re interested).

-Hang Dry herbs upside down in your bedroom (Lavender helps for anxiety and depression… it is very calming or Mugwort for dreams. Mugwort is very invasive, you can find it growing everywhere).

-Herbs placed inside your pillow sheet (Mugwort leaves inside to active lucid dreams).

-Setup an Altar near your bed: add elements of earth, fire, water and air. You can also use your windowsill as an altar.

-Place Black Tourmaline under your bed: shields you energetically by taking the electromagnetic frequencies, and instead of absorbing them, tourmaline changes, redirects, cleanses, and purifies the energy. This is how it handles negativity, even energies of psychic attack too!

-Place Sigil writings or powders for protection and restful beauty sleep under your mattress.

-Keep a dream journal under your pillow! Dreams can help us get a glimpse into our subconscious and the more dreams you write the easier it becomes for you to remember them.

-Unless you are allergic, sleep with the window halfway open or cracked to let good energy move around and circulate in your room and keep skin hydrated during the night.

-Drink herbal tea before bed each night. (Request free herbal tea recipes from me if interested) Mugwort tea is great to have in the evening before bed to reach high levels of lucid dreaming

-Smoking Herbs before bed is great as well. Book for further reading: Smoke Plants Of North America by M.R. Ross. (Request free Smoke Blend recipes from me if interested). With reverence, Rosemary Milk

D for Desert Witch

  • Magic in the desert is
  • Sunsets more brilliant than anywhere else in the world.
  • Lightning storms that put the fear of the gods in your heart and fire in your soul.
  • Saying hello to the lizards on your front porch.
  • Tumbleweeds.
  • Coyote eyes glistening in headlights and knowing it’s time to turn back.
  • Old tribal legends told around a campfire that your rational mind says can’t be real, but deep down in your heart you know they are.
  • Flash floods that kill.
  • The overwhelming soothingness of creosote smell.
  • Cold mornings when snow caps the mountains and clouds hang too low.
  • Hawks sitting on lampposts just before the lights come on.
  • Abandoned hogans and gas stations.
  • Sandstone in more colors than you ever imagined could be possible.
  • Bats.

  • The constant, oppressive, awesome, comforting, devastating reminder that this desert mother could kill you in a moment and it is only by chance and willpower that we survive here.

  • Desert - Using and utilizing the desert environment. Lots of work with hardier plants such as Cacti or Tumbleweeds. Use of the moon, desert earth, fire, rare water (especially rainwater), wind, local plants and herbs, as well as animals/creatures of the desert such as snakes, spiders, scorpions, and so on.

Red Dirt between your toes. Becoming energised under the blistering heat of the summer sun. Substituting rainwater in spells for 10 months of the year and then forgetting to stock up when it does actually rain. So, much, eucalyptus. And tea tree. And lemon myrtle. Wandering through scrubland and feeling like you’ve hit gold when you discover a small rockpool. Hanging out in your garden in the morning with the birds who flock to your birdbath. Becoming intimately familiar with both the destructive and cleansing powers of fire.

Desert Witch is a witch who lives in the desert, enjoys the natural desert scenery, uses desert plants, bones, sand in their practice, collects desert rocks, and befriend desert animals such as snakes, lizards, and scorpions. They also tend to use the elements of Wind and Fire as well as Earth in their practice. They normally worship desert deities and study desert lore in their area.

To me, this has been very interesting witch type and I really liked to do the research on it. I really like the desert vibes and everything in it. Sadly there isn´t anything similar here in Finland. But I have my plants and that is good for me now. I wil definately keep doing research on this topic. You may see more today´s outfits and decor about it!

Desert Witch things to do

1. Write affirmations into sand and let the wind destroy them with time

2. Lots of sun powered magick, you could even develop a ‘drawing down the sun’

3. Succulent gardens using life giving water as offerings or leave out water bowls for whatever wandering spirits need a drink

4. Become familiar with desert dwelling spirits and myths

5. Create rock mandalas for meditation or rock protective circles for sacred space

6. Make use of empty space at night to integrate constellations into your practice

Few interview takes:

"I would say that is a more harsh road than witches who do not live in the desert. While resources can still be abundant, we have to be conservative with our regents and things gathered from the outside world. Learning to trust, respect and understand the earth out here is much more vital and challenging as it seem to bite back with every step you take. The vibrations in the sands and rock are lower and therefore trickier to tap into. But the labor is worth it. When we are rewarded, it seems to be even more fruitful than lust farmland. When you´re actually tapped into the energy, you can feel her wanting to work with you, creating a give and take. I feel it look a lot like a monk sitting under a waterfall for training. Except it´s  constant sun instead of water."

"I use water in my practice and to me people think it can be though to use water in my practice because of living in the desert, no sea water, little rain water but I use tap water. I think most witches would be "appalled" because it´s tap water with all the chemicals and such but we have to use what we got. On the other hand I´m lucky that my tap water comes straight from a well so it´s straight from the earth."

"To be connect closer to the desert I have tools, decor mostly from desert areas. My besom  and wands are made of forward items around here. Holders, chalice, offering plates/cups, bell, stones, decor, candles, etc, I get from India."

"My tools are fairly normal things for a witch to have... But I do try to only use things that are found in my area. For example I smudge with desert sage and palo Verde instead of the typical white sage and palo Santo. I do tend to stay on the sun side of icons as well. My altar plaque is a sun. My mask is sun themed. My athame has a gold handle."

"Well the tools that I actively use are crystals, my copper mug (which I´m planning on using it as a cauldron tpye of device), paint and paintbrushes here and there, candles (which I just started to use). I do have a couple chalices and a bell but I don´t really use them."

"I´m originally from Indiana. So far from the desert. I met my now husband in Indiana and when we first started dating he told me he planned to move to Phoenix by the end of the year. I´ve always been more or warm weather person and Indiana was far from the perfect spot to me so I moved with him.

In Indiana, I was an elder of a large pagan group. When I moved to Phoenix I decided to find a smaller group to hone in my skills. At first, my magic almost flatlined. But the more I got out to see nature in the desert, the more enthralled I became with everything. The fact that so much lives on so little was really inspiring to me. I also started to connect to the history of the land and the natives that called it home before I did.
When I started to put effort in these areas, new doors opened up for me. I felt the earth embrace my presence on her. Which I never felt before in Indiana. (not saying it´s not possible) but after making connections to native shamans here, I´ve really learned the benefits of walking harsh land like this."

"My favorite thing about the desert is the rock formations and structures."

Desert Magic - Solar Cleansing Spell (found on Tumblr)

What you need:
A clear and sunny day (note: this spell is designed for those living in a desert. If you do not, a day with a high UV index will work. weather websites will tell you the UV index for your area for the day)
a place to lie or sit comfortably in the sunlight (be safe; wear sunscreen as this can take some time)
What you do:
Get yourself into a comfortable position lying down or sitting in the sunlight. Close your eyes and feel the sun’s intense energy on your skin.

The sun is harsh and anything blocking its light casts long and obvious shadows. Focus on the shadows within you if you know them, or just envision a tree made of shadow, roots reaching far down and branches tall, blocking the light and natural energy flow.

Focus on the overwhelming energy and light outside of your body and bring it inwards, watching it burn away the shadows leaving nothing but raw sunlight across a flat plane. Feel the heat of the sun on your skin burn away any shadows creating chains on you in this realm. Sit/lay there until you feel that any spiritual, emotional, and magical gunk has been burnt away.

This is easily modified to break any spells cast on you and to reveal hidden truths. It can also be modified to use for banishing where instead of focusing the energy to burn away things clinging to you, you direct the pure solar energy to burn away and destroy the thing you want banished.

For more intense cleansings I like to incorporate creosote aroma either by burning it or via oil aromas to help strengthen the initial cleanse

Magickal properties of desert rain water

Spring is fast approaching and I have been seeing a lot of posts about magickal correspondences such as flowers and trees that are not easily found in the desert especially water.

In other parts of the world rain water is easily accessible because it just rains, almost on cue. In the desert, rain is rare and usually each storm is months apart. This makes it very special in witchcraft.

Rain water in general is used for purification, protection, and energy.

Desert rain is a gift that quenches the earth’s thirst and provides life for the wild life that has gone without for probably months at a time.

Dessert rain can come both peacefully and with awesome storms and immense power.

Desert witch tip
Use the spines of a cactus for protection spells and curse work.

Desert witch tip 2
Grow aloe plants in your home for peaceful energy and protection. It also gives good luck to have it in your kitchen.

Music I listen to while doing this:
