Lughnasadh 2018

Lughnasadh, also known as Lúnasa, Lùnastal, Luanistyn or Lammas, is a Gaelic festival of the first harvest, which also corresponds with other European early harvest festivals. It is held on the 1st of August, halfway between the Summer Solstice (Litha) and the Autumn Equinox (Mabon).

The festival is named after the Celtic god Lugh, and part of the festival is often offering some of the first harvest’s bounty in gratitude, and feasting or athletic competitions. Historically, journeys to sacred wells or holy shrines, or climbing mountains or hills have been popular, and in some places are still observed. Lugh is often seen as a personification of the first harvest, or the corn itself, and he is sometimes recast as folkloric figures such as John Barleycorn.

Lughnasadh colours: gold, orange, yellow, green, light brown

Today´s outfit:
All thrifted except the knee socks, they are from H&M
Everything here is my actual favorites at the moment.

This Lughnasadh was super special to me. Week early I planned what to eat and we cook together, it was so homey. I also wanted to have special outfit, make my altar, clean the whole house and do stuff that I planned. I also read a lot of info that I even didn´t know and now I want to share them with you. Some reason, in many years I haven´t celebrated this Sabbath but I guess, now I am taking it back, and more! I am planning to celebrate the whole month and until Mabon. I have baked 3 breads, cleaned everyday (this still seems endless because I have so much stuff) and I have obsession about my closet, I need to declutter it this autumn so I can have piece of mind.. and I can make a closet tour. Finally.

Lughnasadh foods: Bread, corn, soup, root vegetables, berries, mead, rice, barely, nuts, seasonal fruits, roasted meats, honey, beer

Blueberry pie

"Similar to the Roman god Mercury, Lugh is known as a god of both skill and the distribution of talent.  He is a patron of the arts and a skilled warrior.
The Book of Invasions tells us that Lugh came to be associated with grain in Celtic mythology after he held a harvest fair in honor of his foster mother, Tailtiu. This day became August 1, and that date ties in with the first grain harvest in agricultural societies in the Northern Hemisphere. In fact, in Irish Gaelic, the word for August is lunasa. Lugh is honored with corn, grains, bread, and other symbols of the harvest. This holiday was called Lughnasadh (pronounced Loo-NA-sah). Later, in Christian England the date was called Lammas, after the Saxon phrase hlaf maesse, or “loaf mass.“"

"Lughnasadh is a festival called by many names as it is celebrated throughout the Pan-Celtic cultures. One of the names that has been documented in Ireland is Brón Trogaill, from Tochmarc Emire. Máire MacNeill in her book The Festival of Lughnasa tells us that  Brón Trogaill is understood to mean “Earth’s sorrows” giving the strong implication of a woman in childbirth.  Brón is a word with the meaning of “sorrow, grief, grieving, lamentation; distress, burden” and is also used in phrases like ro and brónbríg, “ weakened sorrows’ force” and brón déisi ag dathaghadh,  “harvest’s gloom.”  In  Tochmarc Emire Trogam is said to mean “earth” and on eDIL it is defined as “body” and the root of the word Trog is defined as “parturition or offspring”"

"The most well known story associated with the festival is that of Lugh’s foster mother Tailtiu. We’re told in Lebor Gabála Érenn, “the Book of the Taking of Ireland,” that Tailtiu was the daughter of a king of Spain and the wife of Eochaidh mac Eric, who was the last Fir Bolg king in Ireland. After the battles between the Fir Bolg and Tuatha Dé Danann she survived and went on to foster Lugh. We know very little about her as a person but she was honored by her foster son with the funeral games, Áenach Tailteann, after she died in a noble sacrifice to clear the plains of Ireland for agricultural purposes.

These funeral games are what we enjoy now. People would come together for everything from; horse racing, feats of strength, reciting poetry, marriage ceremonies, trading, feasting, judgments, divorces, etc. The whole community would be under a truce while the festival was carried out, it likely lasted about a week."

"By Lughnasadh, The Sun God has already begun his downward journey, facing now toward the dark frosts of Winter. The Goddess, however, never wanes. She simply changes appearance. At Lughnasadh, She wears a face of exquisite abundance.

During the season of high Summer the bounty of our planet is in full swing. We reap the benefits of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. This is a time when most of us experience exceptionally good health and robust living.

Lughnasadh marks the last heyday of the Sun God. Beneath the Barley Moon and Summer stars we, too, enjoy the expiring passions of the season. Marriages are often entered into at Lughnasadh as well as at Midsummer, and as Robert Burns tells us, it is a “happy night” that he spends among the cornfields with his lover. Lughnasadh is a tome when the symbolic aspects of the life-sustaining elements of grain spill over into every part of life."

Magical Herbs

"Lughnasadh marks a turning point in the Earth’s life cycle. Although Summer is hot and bountiful, more visible signs of the Sun’s waning strength lie just around the corner in Autumn’s fallen leaves. During this time of year, Witches use herbs to bring good fortune and abundance in their cooking, healing, potions, and spellwork. All grains, seeds, herbs, and flowers gathered now can be dried for later use during Winter or for decorating the altars of future Sabbats. Like herbs, grains are considered sacred and should be harvested with a magically charged “golden” sickle."

"In many regions in the northern hemisphere, Lughnasadh is berry-picking time. In the British Isles, bilberries are particularly plentiful. Gathering bilberries at Lughnasadh is an ancient ritual that has bearing upon the Summertime harvest as a whole. If the bilberries are bountiful, the crops will be plentiful. Just about every herb, flower, and grain reaches its peak of color, flavor, and magical potency in Summer. Garlic is a particularly versatile herb that is used for protection against negative energy and to cleanse and purify the body. Marigold helps us to communicate with Faeries and increase psychic ability. Moss is for financial gain, and at Lughnasadh vervain is used for wealth as well as protection.

During this season of marriages, yarrow is a common ingredient in wedding gift philtres and oils for love and union. Hops, used in flavoring beer and ale, favorite Lughnasadh beverages, are also good for sleeping and healing. Witches make healing compresses and teas from comfrey to enhance the healing of broken bones, scrapes, and bruises."

Following is a list of herbs to use in your magic during the Lughnasadh season:

Golden rod, nasturtium, clover blossom, yarrow, heliotrope, boneset, vervain, Queen Anne’s Lace, myrtle, rose, peony, sunflower, poppy, milkweed, Irish moss, mushroom, wheat, corn, rye, oat, barley, rice, garlic, onion, basil, mint, aloe, acacia, meadowsweet, apple leaf, raspberry leaf, strawberry leaf, bilberry leaf, blueberry leaf, mugwort, hops, holly, comfrey, marigold, grape vine, ivy, hazelnut, black thorn, elder, bee pollen, Magical Stones

"Our imaginations can easily be taken in by the magical charms of stones. They are simple enough in themselves, yet we watch and touch and remember, sometimes brooding upon their eternal composition. Witches believe that stones, despite their seeming lack of animation, are objects of wisdom and great positive energy and, like water, are one of the purest of all of Nature’s forms. For untold centuries we have paid attention to the effect of light on form. The geometric forms of crystals reveal fresh new perspectives that aid us in preparing for the future.

At Lughnasadh, as at all the Sabbats, we affirm the time-honored importance of stones as our friends. In addition to prosperity and growth, we seek confidence to face what lies ahead and a strengthening of our bond with Nature. The constancy of each individual stone on Earth centers on a mystical kind of compressed raw energy. Stones contain dynamic qualities and to us they exhibit a magical sensibility seemingly at odds with their concreteness. Within the core of each lies imprisoned, like the Young God himself, the concentrated, exquisite spirit of energy and light. Realizing these truths about about the magic of stones is particularly helpful during this turning point on the Wheel of the Year, when we straddle Lughnasadh’s amazing paradox of abundance and loss."

Following is a list of stones to use in your Lughnasadh magic:

Cat’s-eye, golden topaz, obsidian, moss agate, rhodochrosite, clearquartz, marble, slate, granite, lodestone, amber, citrine, aventurine, peridot

Ideas for Lughnasadh celebrations:

-Bake bread! Baking bread is one of the most traditional ways of celebrating this festival, and the first of the grains have been harvested. Consider baking different types of loaves, experiment with plaiting the dough or drawing designs on the top. Add seasonal berries, nuts or seeds to the dough to add flavour and interest. I make different kind of bread every time, I am trying to find the perfect way to make bread.

-Have a picnic with friends and family – with lots of bread! I went a picnic with Anna, it was awesome.

-Just go outside and enjoy the nature.

-Play games with friends or family
-Make a donation of food to your local food bank or donate money to a charity
-Hold your own Lughnasnadh ritual, light a fire and offer some food to the god Lugh and thank him for your harvest, and feel gratitude in knowing that all your efforts are coming to fruition
-Make corn dollies, instructions for lots of interesting designs can be found online, or make sculptures and decorations out of salt dough
-Light a candle and make a list of all that you are thankful for, and meditate upon this
-Go on a foraging trip, look for early apples, plums, berries and edible fungi (ensure you are certain of what you are harvesting before you eat it!)
-Dress to impress!
-As summer winds to a close and autumn approaches, make crafts and decorations for your home that celebrate the outdoors and the gifts of nature.
-A unique wearable craft would be a harvested wheat crown!
-The season from late summer to the middle of fall is often a season of heightened energy for those who identify with the warrior soul.  Meditations focusing on courage, physical strength, dexterity, and valor would be a great way to honor your inner warrior.
-Clean and change your bed sheets. It´s amazing feeling to sleep and smell clean sheets.

A for Air Witch

Pictures by Satu Newhouse

Air - Specifically centered on the element of Air; working with wind, using air-related tools (such as the wand, broom, feather, staff, incense, censer, pen, bell ), creating and using symbols associated with air.
Purification with air is very suitable for people with air signs – Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius – especially at times of emotional confusion and a burden of non-supportive emotions.
Color: Yellow
Plants: Fragrant flowers, dill and leaves, acacia, anise, aspen, clover, lavender, pine, frankincence, lemongrass, myrrh, vervain, yarrow
Crystals: Topaz, amber, citrine, jasper, agate
Metals: Tin, copper
Ruling planet: Mercury, Jupiter, Uranus
The Air Witch specializes magickally in spirits, ghosts, invisible beings, travel, inspiration, dreams, wishes, creativity and changes.

There isn´t fire without air. I am a fire element. I have always thought I am just soooo fire. But doing the research for this first post about all the witch types (I will do little bit over 50 witch type posts, I hope you will enjoy this year as much as I do!) I know, I realized how air element describes me.

Just like air witches, I am very cheerful, I have so much energy, I seem flaky and airheaded and I like to use my intelligence. I often walk my head in the clouds and I may say things that I wasn´t suppose to say. I chat constantly, I am quiet only when I am depressed or tired. I always want to make people laugh and smile, I still may get on people nerves for that.

I give room for change, it scares me sometimes, but I still like to change my style, my type of thinking, see new people, go on new events and have this flow of new..ness. I am always working on something, I like to start projects with great energy and I am super exited about them. But my projects may lay around for a long time until I get my enthusiasm back. I want to be true to myself, inspire others by doing so and achieve my goals.

"Water rules creation, earth rules rebirth, and air rules the cross over a threshold-in other words, the gates of death. The Air Witch has a decidedly dark side and a complex character. Her focus is more on the death side of nature, due to her realm, which includes death, along with sustaining life. You can only survive a few minutes without air, but if you breathe the wrong air, such as poisonous gas, you will die immediately. Air brings disease, death and destruction side by side with life."
-Witches of the craft

This is something that I haven´t even think about but it sounds so gothic to me, sign me in! Air witches does work with the dead. Ghosts are easy to work with and air witches often uses Ouija and  pendulums as tools. The Air Witch has a talent for necromancy and clairaudience. Using storm and weather magick is common. This is what I relate mostly, because I always keep talking and praying to Ilmatar (Finnish weather Goddess), even back when I was a kid. She seems closest to me and my rain majick has never fail this far. I would really love to try make the rain come or even use something as powerful and new to me: storm majick. But I will get to that on later post and hopefully I have tried it and can tell something about that on my on behalf. But this I can say, just like air witches, when I get mad, I am like the storm but I get calm very soon. My moods changes like weather anyway, quickly and you never know what comes next.

I often use air as a purification. It is really easy to do. You can do it even when walking, just think that the wind will wash away all of your pain, negativity and bad thoughts. It will pure you and leave you feeling fresh. All new positive energy will come with the wind and you feel powerful.

About the tools.. I don´t have much air related but I have 2 pendulums and I use incenses and a broom which I made with my husband for our wedding. I have been thinking about making a wand or a staff but haven´t found the perfect type of tree yet. I don´t even know which one to use. I am waiting for it to call me and tell me, this is it, this is your wand here! Also, I would need to go for a walk in the forest more often, can´t find sticks here in my home. I also use feathers that I found outside. They are actually death related because I found them knowing someone is going to die (that year 3 died). They mean a lot to me and are very effective for my use. Never actually realized the connection of these 2.. interesting.

I took the pictures today with my friend Satu who is so clawsome and is willing to help me trough this year´s today ´s outfits and taking pictures of them. So very many new pictures coming up! But about this post, I wanted the pictures have light and lot of air, the feathers also represent air. But yeah.. this post was fun to make, so much research, so much coldness outside and so many ideas about everything and I even learn new things, can´t wait the next one!

What is your element? What is your favorite type of witch? What is your type?

Imbolc 2018

What inspires me the most at the moment is my witchcraft. When I think about nature, wicca, witchy things and all the little details, I just feel me the most. It is very empowering feeling. This year feels so good, all the vibes are just right and everything seems to work the way I imagine it. All the photoshoots goes so well, my way to working life is doing great, my new meds are working and I don´t just cry all the time.. I have this amazing energy in me which I want to use in creative way.

Imbolc (pagan Sabbath which you celebrate 1.-2.2.) has inspired me to do more crafts and even decorate my home in Sabbath colors and make some certain mood in our home. To me Imbolc represent white, the white snow is so pure, there is no negativity, it is like new sheet of paper, you can write or draw anything you like. Pinterest came my life again in such a big way and I fell in love with the ideas of minimalistic in decor, just little details that makes the atmosphere. Candles, white, curtains, white. I really love the old jars that has been waiting for some new use for my crafting projects, but actually they look perfect as candle holders. After I took these pictures I washed more jars so now our table in living room will be the same mood.

This sabbath inspires me to white goth style and channel some moon energy. I am so into crystals at the moment, I just wish I have money to buy more. I want to learn more about them and make my home energy to have more flow to it. Also I am interested how to use them in healing or in my own personal life. Any gem fans out there?

I also started few bigger projects I will show you after I am done with them, but the beginning/ test run you can see in the window. Last Imbolc I gathered some wood from the forest and I finally got some string and I want some big witchy decor on my walls that I have made myself. There is also coming some dreamcatchers and paintings that I have been thinking on putting to the walls. I am so hyped about this month, can´t wait to show what else I have been doing! I am so gonna celebrate Imbolc the whole month.

Blessed be darklings.
Be true to yourself.

Ulvinde

What I have been doing? Where I have been? Well, lately all over. I am super exited about new photoshoots and using my creative energy to photos and new projects. Many of the projects are the ones I have been thinking of doing for years. This year I will do every idea I haven´t in some reason done already. No more excuses.  Can´t wait to show you the new pictures. The first photoshoot I had this year by modeling myself was these beautiful pastel goth pictures which I took with Annielina Stenberg. My hair finally came out like it should have been in the first place.

Also this year I want to try every possible field of jobs I want to do. Just trying and seeing what kind of different kind of jobs are, I think I will find my own place, finally. My rehabilitation is going super well, I can even wake up in the morning and do things the whole day. It hasn´t happen in years. I also started new medication which seems to be working, I don´t cry and I feel very stable and my normal self with all the energy. Now that I don´t cry for hours everyday, I really can enjoy life the fullest. People who don´t want to understand how hard is to live with depression, should try to live someone´s life who has it. All the pain has bring me new ways of thinking. I see way more clearly, I want to people have their own space and opinions. I don´t want to impose my own sentiment to others. Well, best friends still has their part of my emotional break downs and certain strong opinions but I realized I am me, and they are them. It feels so good, it is like I am finally free of my ego´s demand of mirroring others reactions. It still happens some times, but way less than before.

Things that lead to this were few bad arguments with my best friends, I realized how selfish I have been. I really want to be better friend. I really want to be the better me. I don´t anymore want to be anybody else. I am enough, and because I always do the stuff I love at the moment, my own company feels great. I feel happy alone and when I am with others. I hope it comes trough with my pictures, I have this certain mood about silence, peace and moody atmosphere. Altough I am not in the silence at the moment, I am listening one of my favorite albums this year Myrkur´s M. With all the eerie and almost creepy beautiful voice and with the elements of witchy sounds and black metal, I just feel like myself while listening her. I feel like going to some other world or feel like creating something. I am probably going to see her concert in Helsinki next week, If you are there, come and say hi!

"And like a shadow upon the skies fell
my evil child I listen to you tonight
I turn off the day, the storm takes hold
the kingdom of death whispers my name in the long night
they thirst for our pure blood
together we walk in the shadow of what disappeared
the useless creatures fell
but they must honor us by the foot of the tree"

My Cabinet of curiosities

Biggie is one of my favorites, probably because it is the biggest skull I have at the moment

Beltane is always one of my biggest sabbats and I am used to do Spring cleaning around that time. I am almost finished, but I still need to go trough quite much stuff to throw away.. I am just way too full of all the stuff I have. The limit has come.
Bedroom has been this years project (last year it was the kitchen, I am taking pictures from it too, but I am going trough few cabinets first and there is little bit of a chaos at the moment..) and I got huge amount of inspiration and power from the Spring  sun. I decided it is time to paint the walls white (I will show some before and afters soon too), because the wallpapers were just.. ugly. White totally brightened the whole room, it feels so much bigger and calm. And I love the contrast of white and black.

Little deers I have all around the house

The old bookshelf (which was brown before I painted it black) got new look this year because I wanted it to be my new cabinet of curiosities. It shows most of my bone collection and few of my witch things. I didn´t move my witch books or tarots, because I have noticed this is a good place for them. The lights has been there from last Yule, they look so pretty that I don´t want to take them off at all.

I just love these birdies

Foxy lady

Chicken bones, a full rat (still on wraps) and a raccoon dog

My healing crystals, which has been loaded with snow magick

Lambie lamb

First dream catcher I made this year

I still want more bottles!

Little glass cup was used on our wedding ceremony and now it has magical herbs in it
